Mrs Pammi Pyarelal. on Colors @ 7:00 PM

16th July 2013

I have enlisted myself to watch Playtime Creations "Mrs Pammi Pyaarelal".

Playtime Creations PH is from Paresh Rawal, Swaroop Sampat Rawal and Hemanth Thakker. Previously I watched their show Ruk Jaana Nahin on Star Plus. That also used to be 7:00 PM show.  RJN had excellent cast with quality supporting actors, who were fun to watch for their sheer dialogue delivery It was enjoyable though TRP did not go high due to lack of story.

Now, let's see if they face the same issue again. Seeing the first episode yesterday, I saw that, they intend NOT to have any Story and just want to go for comedy, slap-stick and situational. They are mocking the filmy fundas through Param Gulati's character. He is played by Gaurav Gera and is playing the makeover Pammy Pyaarelal.

I liked the episode on Day 1 as it really does not stress me out with lack of story and just watch the actors. I liked it and here and there I was smiling.  That was good effort me when I am watching alone. If I really laugh out hilariously, I am definitely gonna share with you.

Gaurav Gera is from Delhi Theater background. So his acting will not be bad at all. But I was seeing how his lips were dark. Must be a heavy smoker. LOL! that he gets the chance to dab them with glossy red lip colors!

Each character introduced yesterday has one unique trait about him or her that was becoming the point of being a caricature with somehow only PG yaani Pammy looking naive between all the other caricatures.

No rating at this time.

But like I said, I will tell you when I start laughing hilariously...So I was  LOL when watching the 1st part in Pammy Pyaarelal yesterday.

I have to say the Playtime writers have a penchant for the song "Naino mein Sapna, Sapne Mein Sajna"...the Sridevi and Jeetendra song.  They created 2nd time the hilarity around the same song. Earlier in Ruk Jaana Nahin too the song was used on Roop Kumari character. :))

Its interesting how God Plays with Param Gulati. I was reminded of us, our family and other innocent, harmless people chasing their dreams and how God decides to play with them.  Its sad to see the outcome, but God enjoys the comedy out of the mess created by himself for his victims.  And its interesting how Param Gulati, the innocent person plays along in God's Drama.

What was his sin or wrong ? To ask for fulfilment of his wish.

Here is Prashant Bhatt talking on it.

Mrs. Pammi Pyarelal which went on air this Monday has been making waves with its colorful promos and now the actual show too has been much appreciated. An out and out comedy show coming on a popular GEC like Colors, it has made its mark with the viewers all the more because of actor Gaurav Gera who is seen in the title role.
Talking about the show, how the idea originated and how everything fell in place once Gaurav gave his nod, Prashant Bhattgives an insight into the making of the show.
How did the concept of Mrs. Pammi Pyarelaloriginate?
The concept of Mrs. Pammi Pyarelal was playing on my mind for almost a year and a half now. It was my idea to do something crazy since I love humor. In fact, I'm a big fan of crazy comedy and having said that I was waiting for the right time which I would say has come now to introduce a show like this to our audience.
None of the GECs have a proper comedy on prime time, so don't you think it is risk?
I might be taking a risk as the idea of having a proper comedy show on a proper fiction GEC is something new but that is what must be the thought on the mind of the viewers too as to 'Why doesn't such a thing exist on a proper GEC? Why are we not doing a proper comedy show? Why do we need to go to some other channel to see comedy?' We have an excellent line up of shows on Colors but why not a comedy is what even we used to think. I always used to say that I have a comedy in mind, and I am working on the idea and I am just waiting for things to fall in place and that's how this came in. Also in these stressful times people need to find out ways to laugh, reason to smile, ways to de-stress then why not offer them a comedy which will take a heavy load off their shoulder.
There have been many films – both Indian and foreign based on similar concept. Is there any particular film which has inspired this show?
None of the films have inspired this particular show. There have been films like Tootsie, Mrs. Doubtfire, Mrs. 420 but none in particular have been used as an inspiration. If you remember then way back in our Indian films men only would play the role of women since it was actually taboo for women to enact the role of a man. So men getting into this get-up is an age old concept in theatre and that particular thing left a thought in everyone's mind. So we see it in a film which is a two hour start to finish kind of thing which is easy to pull off. We wanted to see whether we can do the same with a TV show… so we decided to do this 6 - 8 months show involving a humongous budget and decided to check whether we could pull it off for 6 times a week, every week, month after month. That was a big question and to know whether we can we had to start off first.
So how is Mrs. Pammi Pyarelal different from similar such shows?
A lot of research work went on in this show. A lot of pre-production planning was involved. The production house spent 2 – 2 months getting the right look for Pammi, make her look like a woman who deserves a second glance. We had to make her look hot. Any man draping a saree and doing a drag scene in a stand-up comedy is different but here she had to be believable. In the show, Pammi has to stay in a household as a woman and she has to look like a woman who can be considered beautiful and not scary. She has to look seductive and hot and someone with an X factor.
And how did you zero down on Gaurav Gera?
For me, no one else but Gaurav Gera could be Mrs. Pammi Pyarelal. As I said this idea was on my mind since a year and half but that timeGaurav Gera was not free. I had decided that I will do the show only if he is free otherwise I will not do it. He was crucial to the show. I have seen his other work too and know his caliber as an actor. He has been uploading short films on You Tube too where he has performed as Chutki and Malti Manohar Mishra type of characters. I know his range as an actor so for me Gaurav Gera was always my Pammi. Last year he was not free since he was committed to his musical play Jhmuroo and he had said that whenever I can devote enough time for a daily soap I will do it for you. We have worked together as actors and he is a friend too so we often meet at common friends. That is when he told me that he will be free around May – June so I told him if he was getting free then I had a concept in mind and even he knew which idea I was talking about so we decided to give it a chance. Gaurav told me that he was ready for a daily soap and he had worked his dates around and so we got started with working on the show. I didn't audition anybody else for the role of Pammi and if he was not free then Pammi would not have been launched at all. So even before my first episode was locked my main lead as in Gaurav as Pammi was locked.
Why the change of production house – from Cinevistaas to Playtime Creations?
Yes, earlier Cinevistaas was supposed to do the show but once they started working they realised they were not comfortable with the comedy genre. There came a point when they thought that it was not there cup of tea, whether it was the comedy genre or the kind of inputs and the kind of work required for this show and this is not an easy show. Asking a man to dress up like a woman and then Gaurav is playing a double role as Pammi and Param in every episode. The show starts with Param and shows his journey from Gorakhpur to Bombay and as to why he has to transform into Pammi. At the same time when he becomes a Pammi he becomes Param too in his own limited private space so it was a difficult show. They felt they could not do justice to the show so they wanted to back out and we said well and good! We have worked a lot with Playtime Creations and we both share the same passion for shows, whether it is comedy or others. They understood the kind of mind set that we had for this show and we realized that if there was someone who could do justice to a comedy like this it had to be Playtime so they were in and we are very happy about the work and how it has shaped up.
Isn't the show's timing at 7 pm a bit too early for a family laughter riot?
These days, the way television has been looked up by viewers, 7 pm has become 9 pm today. Prime time starts from 7 pm and as per the statistics in the recent past a 7 pm show has rated much better than a 9 pm or a 10 pm show. Family show and patterns have changed, in smaller towns and cities or even in cities like Pune which is by no means a small town or small city as such people are home early and even a show at 6:30 starts getting TRPs. We have realized that if it is a good show then people will actually make sure that they will accommodate you.
We also wanted to start up with our entertainment slot with something halka fulka. It is a starter kind of a show, which has thoda khatta meetha taste. I didn't want to give them something heavy at 7 pm itself which will leave the head heavy all through the evening. Mrs. Pammi Pyarelal has a dose of laughter to tickle your funny bone after which we can serve the saas bahu shows, serious family dramas which are a bit heavy as the main course.

"Comedy is more challenging than drama": Mazher Sayed
For the first time, actor Mazher Sayed tries his hand in comedy for Colors upcoming new show Mrs.Pammi Pyarelal.

After being seen in an episodic of Sony TV'SCrime Patrol, Mazher Sayed is all set to return to television in a full-fledged character.  He has bagged Colors most awaited show Mrs. Pammi Pyarelal, in which the actor will be seen portraying a whacky character named 'Ranjeet'.
In conversation with TellyBuzz, the very talented actor Mazher Sayed spills out the traits of his on- screen character, as he says, "My character 'Ranjeet' is supposed to be very filmy in nature. Basically, I'm a flop director who always wants to be praised for his profession. Interestingly, I treat every situation like a still from a movie and I'm ever ready with a song that suits the situation."
Talking further about his comic character, Mazher went on to say, "Ranjeet is also very flamboyant and enticing until Pammi enters his life, which gives flavors to his existence. "
While on one hand, it is usually observed that most of the comedy actors easily switch to drama, on the other hand, not all dramatic actors succeed with comedy. Regarding the same, the actor says, "Yes I truly agree, comedy is a hard task and more challenging than drama. In fact, Comedy is much demanding because it requires an active sixth sense followed by precision-perfect timing! As we all know, at the end, it must appeal to everyone."
When asked about the equation he shares with Gaurav Gera, Mazher says, "Well, this is not the first time that I'm working with Gaurav. Earlier as well, we both have shared a screen-space in the show 'Kahin Kisi Roz'. But now, it's a bit different scenario because I have to fall in love with him." (Laughs).
Leaving a message to the audience, the actor says, "Mrs. Pammi Pyarelal is one of its kind. I'm sure people are going to enjoy our light-hearted new show. Placed at a 7 pm slot, it's going to be like a fresh starter before all the other shows."
Finally the wait ends, as the show is all set to begin today. Are you excited for Mrs. Pammi Pyarelal?

Time: Mon – Sat at 7 pm on Colors
Producer: Playtime Creations
Director: Ashish Khurana
Cast: Gaurav GeraKaran Goddwani, Usha Nadkarni, Mazhar Sayed, Dimple Jhangiani, Vrinda Tewari, Sonia Rakkar.

The story so far – The story for the past one week has been of two friends who are struggling to make it big in Mumbai. One is Param (Gaurav Gera) who has come from a small town Gorakhpur where he's been staying with his old mother and handicapped sister. With dreams of making it big as an actor he lands in Mumbai to stay with his friend Rahul Pyarelal (Karan Goddwani) who is a salesman. Since they find a PG (Paying Guest) accommodation where only couples are allowed, Rahul convinces Param to dress up as a woman and introduces him as his wife Mrs. Pammi Pyarelal to the Fauzdar family who own the massive bungalow where they get to stay as PGs.
The Fauzdar family is full of comic characters – the head of the family is Mrs. Kamini Fauzdar (Usha Nadkarni) with her three sons Rajveer (Sanjeev Jotangia) married to Amrita (Sonia Rakkar), Randhir (Prasad Barve) married to Mohini (Rinku Ghosh) and the youngest as yet unmarried, Ranjeet (Mazhar Sayed). There is also Gayatri (Vindhya Tiwari) and Minty (Dimple Jhangiani) who are Mrs. Fauzdar's grand-daughters and who look like they will ultimately be the love interest of Rahul and Param respectively. While Kamini is a retired Jail superintendent and thus very strict, her elder son is involved in the stock market and talks on many phones at the same time, the middle son forgets his identity when he doesn't take his medicines on time, and the youngest one is a good for nothing character. Amongst the two grand-daughters, Gayatri speaks in shudh Urdu and Minty is as yet to make an entry.
Rahul comes in to stay with Pammi at the Fauzdar house where everyone welcomes Pammi who has to don the garb of a woman all the time. She also goes out shopping with Mohini where the film artiste co-ordinator Pandeyji sees Pammi and finds a resemblance to Param. Everyone finds Pammi very attractive and Mohini wants to learn swimming from her so Pammi even gets into a bikini and into the swimming pool.
What works – Gaurav Gera as Pammi definitely works. The versatile actor puts in his 100 % and more to look and act as the lady killer that he is supposed to be. With apt make-up and costume and a lithe body to support him, Gaurav pitches in with a performance with all the adas and nakhras. The lowering of the eyes, biting the lips, swaying the hips, playing with the pallu and ishaaron ishaaron mein baat karna, Gaurav manages to make it look all convincing. His not using a shrill put-on female voice into the character too works in his favour as his own nasal voice is an advantage for Gaurav.
Karan Godwani as the friend is an excellent support to the main character and delivers a superb performance and so does Usha Nadkarni with her strict demeanor. Vindhya Tiwari delivers her lengthy Urdu dialogues effortlessly and Rinku Ghosh looks pretty.
What doesn't work – The story is nothing new to talk about (we have seen similar stories in films earlier), and the overall look of the show is garish and filmy, in fact too filmy. The sets, the costumes, the accessories – all are pink, green, blue and there is too much of a color riot on screen! The make-up of all actors is too heavy and the costumes are rich making it all look unreal.
The entry of each and every character is accompanied by a filmy background score which at times is very irritating. All the characters are too well defined - someone is too loud mouth, someone is totally forgetful, someone is too strict, someone talks only Urdu! The dialogues too take inspiration from films and even the background music score depends on films! In one week there were at least more than one dozen films which were referred to – Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge, Tezaan, Dabbang, Singham, Kuch Kuch Hota Hain, No Entry, and more! When one particular thing is used as a reference again and again, it looks stale.
Even if Gaurav looks good as a woman, his boyish frame is not one which will be hidden so there are times when his frame does not look all that convincing and this is more so when we see almost all the male characters in the serial falling for this woman. They like the way Pammi walks and talks. They all flirt with her and find her to be their dream woman, which is a bit of over exaggeration!
While comedies and spoofs work on being a bit outlandish this one goes out of hand as there is an overdose and everything is too loud! In this one week, we also saw toilet humor which was added to the show but the comedy here looked crude.
The character of Ranjeet who true to his name which he shares with the real film screen villain who has done roles of a rapist, womanizer in films has the hangover of the screen baddie and attempts to mis-behave with Pammi too. Why would everyone, including Ranjeet who knows very well that Pammi is a married woman want to flirt and tease her? This is not something that we see in normal life and even though Pammi doesn't encourage this the entire scene looks un-civilised.
Our take – If the makers tone down the filmy inspiration and polished it well to give a sophisticated look to the characters the show might look better. While one agrees that comedy at this level, with such a story line has to be a bit over the top, too much of anything damages the entire scene! The use of filmy music and references all the time is avoidable and so is the hammering of the fact that Pammi is oh-so-attractive!
The promos of the show really looked promising and polished. If the makers make serious attempts to make the show look equally glamorous instead of the current flippant approach it still stands a chance to click!

Default Mrs Pammi Pyarelal is a spoofy comedy: Writer Sharad Tripathi

Colors' Mrs Pammi Pyarelal (Playtime Creations) has been a head turner for its unique storyline and dialogues.

Hence, we at got in touch with the show's dialogue writer Sharad Tripathi to understand what goes into writing dialogues for a show like Pammi.

"Pammi is a switchover from the usual storylines. Hence, I am not doing what I did in Kairi or for that matter any other show. There is lot of madness in the way these characters communicate and you will sense that in their dialogues," avers the writer.

"Since, I haven't done comedy before, I got a lot of help from screenplay writer Yunus Sajawal and our director Ashish Khurana. While Yunus ji is the 'King of Comedy' having written comic films all this while like Golmaal and Bol Bachchan that went on to become blockbusters. Ashish ji is a big name in SAB TV, having directed a lot of comedy shows," Sharad adds.

Talking about the research work that he had to undertake to write dialogues in this particular series, Sharad observes, "I had to watch a lot of old comedy movies to get the flair and the flavour of the genre. And then I tried connecting these punch lines with today's time. For example in the olden movies when people would say tumhara muh ghutno tak kyu gira hai, it would mean why are you sad. But if I have to use this line today, I would say tumhara muh rupaye ke bhav ki tarah kyu gira hai. The audience will have an instant connect with this as that's the situation we face currently. As a writer, one must have an update on what's going around us."

"There is this character named Gayatri being played by Vindhya Tiwari who just talks in Urdu as she had stayed in Lucknow for a few years with her parents. Since, she speaks in Urdu I had to upgrade my Urdu speaking skills. Hence, I started reading books written by Urdu writers. So, there are these small home works that one has to constantly keep on doing."

The show also has a lot of film names and filmy dialogues. "It's more of a spoofy comedy. Hence, the audiences will witness a lot of spoofs on films. Like the first dialogue of the show started with aaj khush toh bahot hoge tum an iconic dialogue from the film Deewar," Sharad maintains.

Furthermore, he tells us that Mrs Pammi Pyarelal is here to change the way one looks at television. "I can proudly say that here is a hatke show. It's just that if the audiences watch this show, it will be a motivational factor for a lot of other makers who would want to experiment too. But, if it does not work, TV might get back to the usual saas bahu drama."

Interestingly, Sharad is also writing dialogues for Zee TV's Fear Files.

We wish you good luck… Sharad!!!
